The Big "Why"!

The Importance of Dry-Fire Training

You wouldn’t expect to play like Jimi Hendrix after just a few hours with a guitar, or run a professional kitchen after one cooking class, right? Yet, when it comes to concealed carry and self-defense, millions of Americans are doing just that. As of 2024, over 21 million Americans held a concealed carry permit. Add to that the 29 permit-less carry states, and you're looking at an estimated 65 million Americans who legally carry a firearm for personal protection. But here’s the alarming truth: Fewer than half practice more than once a year. Even fewer pursue training beyond their initial carry class! So ask yourself: could you cook to save your life after one class? Then why would anyone think a single firearms course is enough to defend their life or their family? Sure, many can handle a firearm. But would they be mentally and physically prepared for one of the most traumatic moments of their life? Most people cite time, cost, or restrictive range rules as reasons not to train. But what if we told you there’s a way to train smarter, right at home?

Enter: Dry Fire Training

Dry Fire Training is a game-changer. Using an unloaded firearm or training tools like a SIRT laser pistol and/or the Smokeless Range, you can safely develop crucial skills like:

Trigger control

Sight alignment

Grip and stance

Muzzle and safety awareness

All from the comfort of your home. At little to no cost.

No matter the tool, always follow the 4 Universal Firearms Safety Rules:

Treat every gun as loaded

Never point the muzzle at anything you don’t intend to destroy

Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire

Know your target and what’s beyond it

Follow these rules, and insist those around you do the same. Safe training is effective training.

Shooting Is a Perishable Skill

Like riding a bike, you don’t forget how—but neglect it, and your precision erodes. And unlike you rad bike skills, that regression could cost you in a real-world moment. That’s where muscle memory comes in: performing actions automatically through repetition. With dry fire training, you can build that repetition—thousands of reps—faster, cheaper, and more efficiently than at the range.

Time & Cost Savings

Let’s break it down: A public class could cost you $400–$800 once you factor in tuition, ammo, gas, and possibly lodging. Private sessions could run as much as $1,000 an hour! If you do this live-fire training once a month, it will cost you $2500-$10,000+ a year. You will spend about 150+ hours a year of your time and 1500-3000 reps/rounds fired. If you choose to use CONDITION ORANGE and dry-fire training, your yearly cost will look more like $1000-$3000 a year using as many hours as you need to get it right with 10,000+ reps. This is a fraction of the cost you would pay for any private lesson. So why CONDITION ORANGE and dry-fire, No wasted hours. No costly ammo. Just private, safe, guided, focused and repeatable skill-building.

Train Your Way. Most ranges restrict essential skills like:

Drawing from a holster

Shooting on the move

Rapid-fire drills

These are core components of real-life defense scenarios. Dry Fire Training lets you build those tactical skills safely, and without breaking range rules or your budget.

So where does CONDITION ORANGE come in? We bring the training to you. Our seasoned instructors identify your skill gaps, strengthen your fundamentals, and equip you with at-home drills to keep your edge sharp. It’s personalized, practical, and priced to make real training accessible. Are we saying never go to the range? Of course not. Live fire is essential for understanding recoil, real-time pressure, and live engagement. But with Dry Fire Training, you can refine your skills beforehand—so when you hit the range, you can train with purpose. The next time you head to the range with your friends and they ask how you got so much better, you’ll know the answer:

The Owner and Lead Instructor

Alvin Thompson's passion for action and adventure ignited early, staging battles with toy soldiers and honing marksmanship with BB guns in the backyard. This fascination with firearms and tactics blossomed into a dedicated career in public safety.

In 1989, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a Security Police/Law Enforcement Specialist, earning expert marksman status with rifles and handguns while mastering heavier weapons like the M-60 machine gun and M203 grenade launcher. His service included assignments at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver Colorado and deployment to Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where self-defense and tactical skills sharpened his situational awareness and emphasis on strategic positioning to counter threats swiftly.

After honorable military service, Alvin joined the Denver Police Department in 1995, patrolling streets, handling traffic stops, and responding to calls amid real-world dangers. These encounters reinforced the critical role of awareness and preparedness in preventing or neutralizing violence.

As a D.A.R.E. officer, he discovered his gift for teaching, connecting deeply with others and simplifying complex ideas. This led to his POST certification in 2007, qualifying him as an instructor in handgun fundamentals, less-lethal weapons, de-escalation, crisis intervention, and tactics for the Denver PD. Since 2012, he has proudly trained recruits as a firearms instructor at Red Rocks Community College’s POST Academy.

Inspired by witnessing good people, civilians and officers, feel powerless or uncertain with firearms, Alvin became a certified instructor to build their confidence. He has helped countless individuals earn Concealed Handgun Permits and transform nervous shooters into capable defenders.

Today, through Condition Orange, his training approach is rooted in Jeff Cooper's renowned Color Code of situational awareness. Alvin empowers everyday people who feel intimidated by the culture often surrounding firearms and self-defense by teaching handgun handling skills for beginners and advanced shooters alike, right in the comfort of their homes.

His mission is clear: equip you with the knowledge, skill, and mindset to never feel helpless again. A devoted husband to Melissa and proud father to daughters Ruby and Lily, Alvin draws daily inspiration from his family while committing to make personal protection accessible, clear, and empowering for all.
